Adopted by the US Armed Forces in 1957 and carried through the early years of Vietnam, the M14 was the last great American wood-stocked battle rifle before the polymer-and-aluminium M16 era. It remained in service as a designated-marksman platform long after the M16 replaced it on the front line, and that long, slim silhouette is instantly recognisable today.
