The Thompson submachine gun, also known as the "Tommy gun," "Chicago typewriter," or "trench broom," is a blowback-operated, selective-fire weapon invented by U.S. Army Brigadier General John T. Thompson in 1918. Initially designed to break the trench warfare stalemate of World War I, early models did not see combat in that conflict.
Early adopters of the Thompson included the U.S. Marine Corps during the Banana Wars, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Irish Republican Army, the Republic of China, and the FBI following.
The Thompson gained notoriety during the Prohibition era, becoming a signature weapon for organized crime syndicates in the 1920s. It was widely used by both law enforcement and criminals, making frequent appearances in media of the time.
During World War II, the Thompson was extensively adopted by the U.S. armed forces and other Allied troops. The main models used were the M1928A1, M1, and M1A1, with over 1.5 million units produced during the war.
The Thompson submachine gun holds the distinction of being the first weapon to be labeled and marketed as a "submachine gun."
Nowadays, the Thompson, especially this variant with a front grip and drum magazine, is known from films, TV series, games and other media as the weapon of interwar American gangsters and law enforcement. An American submachine gun used during the Second World War had straight magazines and can be found here - the Thompson M1A1. Both types of magazines are compatible with each other.
